Definitions

Local Startup

  1. HQ or 1 founder and part of the team in based in Montreal
  2. Software is the core part of the business and drives the ability to scale exponentially
  3. Revenue-backed or raised capital from a VC or technology-focused angel investor with the intention to scale rapidly

Not Included on our list

Note: At times it will be difficult to evaluate whether the startup is tech-enabled or core-tech/software. While there are many great Montreal companies that are profitable or near profitable and growing that fall into this category we won’t include them in this list.

Startup Stages

To simplify things we only have 3 stages:

  1. Seed: Raised pre-seed, seed funding, or bootstrapping but has not raised growth capital yet.
  2. Growth: Raised growth capital (equity or debt) or is scaling on revenue.
  3. Unicorn: Valuation >$1B based on recent public market valuation or last publicly reported data.
